Art and Design is an integral part of our curriculum and underpins much of our cross-curricular work. We strive to equip children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We are very lucky to have a designated art studio which is equipped with a variety of artistic tools that the children have complete access too. Developing an ability to draw from direct observation is seen as fundamental to pupils’ progression in art. We encourage pupils to think critically and appreciate other art forms including the work of their peers. Elements of Art and Design are covered in other curriculum areas for example in practical skills in Mental and Physical Wellbeing or cultural, historical elements in humanities. We also expose the children to a variety of different artists of differing backgrounds, cultures and artistic styles so that all children feel represented and valued within our curriculum. It is crucial that all children can see themselves within the art world; understand that art is accessible to all and that there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to artistic expression, ideas and representation.  

Holding class critiques is seen as integral to our teaching and helps to develop the children’s oracy skills. The children’s artwork is displayed prominently within the school and is highly valued. We take part in a number of projects throughout the year that provide children with a real purpose to their artwork, such as the Royal Academy Young Artists Show.
