Dear Parents and Carers,
This week’s senior leader assembly was led by Dennis. The focus was the 75th Anniversary of the Windrush Generation. He approached the topic with a look at the music (it was World Music Day on the 21st June) created by or influenced by the Windrush population. We heard excerpts from songs such as “London is the Place for me” by Lord Kitchener, “My Boy Lollipop” by Millie Small. He discussed the legacy of the Windrush generation and its influence on modern music.
This week in Nursery, we welcomed parents and carers to our fabulous 'Sporty Stay and Play'. The children loved being in the small playground, taking part in slightly different activities, including bat and ball, basketball, space hoppers, catch and hoola hooping! It was wonderful to see so many parents with their children and we particularly enjoyed seeing the adults on the space hoppers! Thank you to everyone for making it such a lovely session.
Year 4 enjoyed a visit from some Year 9 students, who act as Stem Ambassadors, from Bonus Pastor College. The children took part in a carousel of fun activities. They learnt about using absorbent materials in a magic trick, Alka Seltzer producing carbon dioxide and causing a small explosion, putting water in a balloon prevents it popping when held over a candle and much more. The students from Bonus Pastor acted as great role models and gave clear explanations about the experiments. Hopefully, they have encouraged our children to embrace a love of science and helped to further develop their enquiry skills. View photos here, below are some quotes from our children:
- Jules: "I liked everything, especially the balloon experiment"
- Wallis: "I enjoyed the magic trick with the cups."
- Ciara: "I enjoyed the mug and fork trick. I thought the mug would fall but the momentum caused it to be wound in the string"
Yesterday, children across the school wore orange (the colour of solidarity with refugees) and completed activities to raise awareness. Find out more about what is happening across Lewisham: Action for Refugees in Lewisham, Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network.
Ambitious about Autism: A quick note about support for children with Autism. Dennis went to the Autism Show a few weeks ago and spoke to the team at Ambitious about Autism. They have an online community for parents and carers. It offers peer support and information and resources to help you care for your young person.
Diversity Working Group: This year we have been continuing our journey to diversify our provision in all aspects of school life.
We endeavour to do more, and as such Dennis would like to set up a Diversity working group. This group is open to our school community including staff, parents, governors and will be using the pupils' school council to seek pupil views.
The purpose of the group is to help the school to find gaps or weaknesses in our school's approach to all aspects of diversity and inclusivity.
Dennis will be holding a session after school on Monday 3rd July at 3.45pm, venue to be confirmed. Please complete this form if you would like to attend, or if you cannot attend but would be interested in attending in the future.
Yesterday, I sent a letter about the forthcoming NEU strike dates on the 5th & 7th July – here is the link in case you missed it. Philippa sent a letter to parents in Nursery – Year 1 who are going on the beach trip on 5th July. Her letter outlines slight changes to the organisation to the start of the visit and refers to parents with older children as well, her letter can be found here beach trip siblings letter.
Lion King Bake Sale: Thanks to everyone who donated a cake or came along and supported us at the bake sale. We're delighted to have raised £149 for the Lion King production.
Call for help: we are looking at options to overhaul the school hall AV and add sound proofing. We need someone with AV expertise to advise / support us please. If you are interested, please email Jo Roper in the school office via the school email address.
Reminder to parents that you should not be reversing your cars passed the one way system in the middle of Kilmorie Road. School Streets are in place to help keep our children safe, and we ask all of our community to support us in doing so.
As part of this year’s Great Kilmorie Design Challenge, the children have created eco-friendly, sustainable products. These will be for sale during the Parents Drop in evening, 4-6pm on Thursday 6th July. Products will be for sale in classrooms for cash only and most items will be £1. No change will be available so please bring some coins! We invite all parents, Reception to Year 6, to come to our open parents evening. It will also be a good opportunity to see displays about the process the children went through to design and make the products.
Information about next year's class teachers will be sent with your child’s annual school report.
I do hope you are enjoying the sunny INSET day and I look forward to welcoming you back on Monday.
Kind regards
Julie
