Garden News:
"We are having a lovely spring here in the Kilmorie Gardens, we have had daffodils, tulips, forget-me-nots, hyacinths and now the wallflowers and irises are starting to appear. During gardening lessons, we have been looking at the variety of plants we have growing and the range of insects we are finding all over the gardens. In the vegetable beds Year 4 are growing broad beans. They planted the seeds in the autumn and are going to eat the beans straight from the plants in the coming weeks.
The children have also been finding an amazing range of animals in gardening lessons, forest school sessions and at playtime. Recently, at lunchtime Year 2 children unearthed a stag beetle larva and after discussing its amazing lifecycle, (it lives underground in rotten wood for up to 6 years and then becomes an adult for only 4 months), we placed the larva in our special stag beetle area by the Wild Garden. Also in a gardening lesson, we found a centipede and for the first time, saw a millipede along with the usual woodlice, worms, slugs and spiders.
Over the Easter Holiday Freddie (year 4) and Edie (year 6) had a cake sale to raise funds for the Kilmorie Gardens. We really appreciate their effort and kindness to think of the school and will enjoy buying some summer bedding with the money.
Educational Visits:
This week, Conor's class went to Creekside Discovery Centre to explore their 'Rivers' topic in a practical setting. They explored objects that have been found in the river and discovered which industry they were linked to from the past. They also walked through the river with their 'stylish' waders and jackets, identifying the features of rivers and finding a variety of wildlife! They even got to hold some crabs!
Year 3 - The children took part in an artist-led workshop focusing on the painting ‘The Return of the Holy Family from Egypt’ by French painter Nicholas Poussin. The children observed the painting and had an enquiry-based dialogue and conversation about what they thought the painting depicted. We learnt about the colour blue that was used to represent important individuals in paintings and how it was mined from Afghanistan and that the colour yellow was made from cows' urine and clay. They had a chance at focusing on a particular part of the painting and trying to imitate that part using difficult artistic techniques. We looked at different shades of colours used, drawing with our less dominant hand and a printing technique. To view photos from the school trip please click here.
Bella- It was fun and I really enjoyed drawing my eye and using the printing method.
Joe- I enjoyed the activity where I had to use my less dominant hand and draw without looking at what I was drawing.
Year 2 - visited the Horniman Museum to launch their learning on the topic of Kenya. Our workshop took us to two different countries in Africa where we found out more about Kenya and Ghana. To view photos please click here.
Ellie: We learnt about the clothing used to celebrate parties. Everyone wears white except for the person being celebrated. They wear Kente cloth.
Dash: People saw a spider spinning a web and made the Kente cloth to look like spiders in the rainforest.
Year 1 - went to Dulwich picture gallery. We took the 185 bus and had a lovely walk through Dulwich park. They took part in an artist-led workshops. The pupils were supported to experiment with a variety of materials, processes and skills while continuing to consider the workshop theme; impossible paintings. To view more photos please click here.
