Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 28th June 2024
Friday 28th June 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
Another busy week at Kilmorie, particularly with the forthcoming Summer Fair.
First, may I apologise for the delay in sending the newsletter last week. Due to illness, we were unable to send this out on Friday, however normal service will resume this week.
I would like to take the opportunity to say, further to Anita, our Chair of Governors’ letter last week, how honoured and excited I am to be leading Kilmorie next year. I am working closely with Julie and the governors to plan for next year where we will continue to build on everything we have achieved over the last few years and look to develop the school further.
I led this week’s whole school assembly. The theme was looking at how small events can lead to bigger implications. For example, if we all helped by picking up a piece of litter the whole environment would be so much tidier. I also revisited my D-Day theme from a few weeks ago, highlighting how it is important to commemorate events on the day, as on the 6th June, but to remember that such events lasted so much longer than just one day. I concluded with a focus on Pride month. I spoke about the history of the event and how it has developed and grown over the years. I finished by saying whilst we are all different, we are all welcomed and valued.
Tackling Racial Bias meeting – On Tuesday 25th June, Philippa led a meeting with parents to discuss amongst other things, diversity and inclusivity within the school. I would like to thank Philippa for hosting the meeting but also Crystal and Karlene, a school governor, who supported Philippa with the discussion.
We appreciate the input from all concerned, many topics were discussed and as a result some actions were agreed upon, including the creation of a Diversity Parent Action group. The input from the meeting on Tuesday, as well as further meetings from the Action Group, will help form future areas of school improvement. A link to notes of the meeting can be found here. The next meetings are set for Tuesday 17th September at 17:00 and Wednesday 18th September at 08:00. Please save the date- this is an important issue for all parents.
Today we had a fabulous class assembly by Isla’s class all about the history of transportation. I was very impressed by the singing, the remembering of the lines and the brilliant acting. Initially I thought the assembly would have a history focus but it covered many parts of the curriculum, including geography, maths and a focus on environmental issues. Well done to Isla and the team for putting together the assembly and well done to the children!
We are having such a busy time with educational visits. This week we had:?
Elis' Class visited the British Museum as part of the Ancient Egypt learning experience. The children loved the search for artefacts and evidence for how the ancient Egyptians lived. The building was vast and we found: mummies?of people, cats and crocodiles, hippo amulets, sarcophagi specially decorated with pictures and hieroglyphics, Rosetta Stone and many more. What an inspiring day to be a historian!
Today the Tigers visited Surrey Docks Farm. Information and photographs will be provided in next week’s newsletter. ?
Guitar ensemble – Quick reminder that there will be a Guitar ensemble on Monday at 8.30am in the school hall for the pupils having guitar lessons. Parents of our guitarists are more than welcome to attend.
Tuesday 9th July - Lower Phase Choir, Sarah C's class, half of Kate's class, all of year 4 and all of year 6
Wednesday 10th July - Lower Phase Choir, Shona's class, half of Kate's class, all of year 3 and all of year 5
I have heard some of the rehearsals and it is sounding amazing and I am looking forward to seeing all the hard work come together at the Broadway Theatre.
Summer Fair: Finally, I am looking forward to the summer fair tomorrow, which is 12pm to 3pm. Thank you to the Friends of Kilmorie who have been planning and preparing for tomorrow for many months. I hope to see you there! ?
Have a lovely weekend,
Dennis

School News
Hot weather
Although we have been experiencing some hot weather, can we please remind you that children should not be bringing electric handheld fans or spray bottles in to school.
If your child has a drinking bottle with a spray function this should not be used to spray while inside the school building.
International Week:
We are still looking for any parent (or grandparent!) volunteers to come in to share something about another country during International Week (WB 15th July).
We would really like this week to reflect as much of the Kilmorie community as possible. This could be something shared with just your child’s class or more widely throughout the school and could be as small as coming in and answering the children’s questions.
If you have a suggestion or would like to volunteer, please get in touch. Send any emails to the office (info@kilmorie.lewisham.sch.uk) marked for the attention of Martha or speak to someone in the playground.
Gardening Day
Big thank you to all those who came to our Gardening Day last weekend.
The children at the school are always on the look out for interesting bugs and insects, earlier in the year they found a stag beetle larvae. Recently they have been looking out for caterpillars, Abraham (year 2) is very keen on insects and has a very good eye for spotting them, he found this caterpillar shown in the photo, it dropped off a leaf onto his shoulder as he was playing.
Yesterday he found some stripey caterpillars, luckily none of them so far have been the hairy variety.
Kilmorie has been selected to be part of the exciting national PIN's project between September 2024 & March 2025.
Meaningful collaboration with parent/carers is vital to the success in this project so we invite all parents to take part in the survey below.
