Dear Parents and Carers,
This week Kate led the whole school assembly. There were 2 themes that she managed to intertwine. Tuesday marked both World Poetry Day and World Down’s Syndrome Day. She began by reading a poem by Christina Rosetti called Spring, (as 21st March is also beginning of spring) and she ended with a poem written about a child with Down’s Syndrome and how special he is. In between the children learnt a little about Down’s Syndrome, including the fact that it was named after a Doctor Down who first recognised the condition while working in an asylum around 150 years ago. They also celebrated James Martin, who starred in a short film that recently won an Oscar – not only was he the first person with Down’s Syndrome to win an Oscar, but he also won it on his birthday!
We had a wonderful class assembly from Maria and Simone’s class. The children not only took us through life in the Stone Age, they reminded us that without this very important stage in History, we would not have many of the tools and things we take for granted today, such as fire. They also highlighted the important qualities that the people of the Stone Age showed: resilience, curiosity, innovation and collaboration, to name a few and how we at Kilmorie not only have them but recognise their importance too. What a fabulous assembly to round off our class assemblies this term – well done Maria and Simone’s class. More photos here.
As you are aware, our end of year production this year is The Lion King. All parts have been given out and rehearsals are getting underway! I am excited to announce that we will be performing at St Dunstan's College theatre on two dates, with 2 performances per day: Tuesday 11th July will be for years 2, 4 and 6 and Wednesday 12th July will be for years 1, 3 and 5. Performance times will be confirmed by the end of next week.
Kilmorie School Vision & Priorities Meeting – thank you to those of you who attended. This was a great opportunity for Anita, Chair of Governors and me to share the vision for the school, our school improvement priorities and brainstorm ways we can work together. Thank you to Friends of Kilmorie for keeping us refreshed but also for sharing with us not only how they support but also the many ways people can get involved. For those of you that missed it, the slides have been uploaded to the website.
Thank you to our gardening team of volunteers who came to school last weekend to continue preparation for spring. The sun was shining, giving all those helping with the gardening an extra boost. The team planted and weeded our outside spaces and installed the beautiful new garden signs created by Lauren (a mum of a year 3 child). Thank you to Eva and Olly. I am delighted to hear that there were a lot of children helping too. Read full article here.
We had two wonderful ensembles this week. On Tuesday we saw the children from years 5 and 6 who are learning Guitar do an array of individual and group pieces. On Wednesday, we had the violin ensemble where we saw a wonderful mix of set pieces and their own interpretations. Well done everyone, it was wonderful to see such talent.
We have had a number of educational visits this week. Vicky’s Year 5 class today have had their visit to Deptford Creekside Discovery Centre – I do hope they didn’t get too wet! Yesterday, Year 1 visited St George’s Church to support learning in Religious Education which this term has a focus of Christianity. They had a great time and thank you to the parents who volunteered. Do please click here to have a look at the pictures.
Year 2 were also out yesterday enjoying an action-packed trip to Greenwich. Thank you to those who were able to support with the visit, everyone had lots of fun exploring the Cutty Sark and the galleries of the National Maritime Museum. Do please view the photos and read more.
Early Phase Garden Party is on Saturday 13th May 11.30-14.30. All those in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 please make a note in your diaries to join the Early Phase team at the special coronation themed garden party on Saturday 13th May! It is such a lovely event especially for the younger Kilmorie children and the money raised will go towards the seaside trip taking place in the summer term. Please see FoK News box below for more information and how you can support.
Well done to Erin K (Early Phase), Wren Hadden (Lower Phase) and Maya Gilby (Upper Phase) for winning this year’s Winkworth Easter Competition. Winkworth had a very tough job judging the entries, but the team were particularly impressed by the creativity of the 3 winners. Each child will receive a £20 voucher and certificate, plus their artwork is centre stage in Winkworth’s window in Forest Hill.
Vitality Big Half, Sunday 3rd September 2023 – FoK are hoping to enter a community team into the Big Half again this year. Last year, the Big Half raised an impressive £5887! If you are interested in being part of the Kilmorie team and willing to raise sponsorship money for the school, please email friendsofkilmorie@hotmail.co.uk. All experience levels and abilities are welcome.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Kobi in Year 5 who took part in an international youth football tournament in Lithuania last weekend. He did this playing for Chelsea Academy, where he brought home the under 11s best striker award. This is an incredible achievement of which I hope he is very proud – well done Kobi.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. Every April Autism Speaks celebrates World Autism Month, which begins with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. Whilst I know we will be on holiday, I felt it was important to share this event as it is an opportunity to raise awareness of this condition, which is very much part of our school community.
Ramadan Mubarak to all our families who celebrate, if some of our older children are wishing to fast, please make sure the school is informed. Have a wonderful weekend, do please remember that the clocks change this weekend and we ‘spring’ into summer, meaning longer days, and hopefully some sunshine.
I look forward to seeing you next week at the International Week performances.
Kind regards
Julie
