Dear Parents and Carers,
There’s a lot going on, it’s a jam-packed newsletter this week!
This week’s whole school assembly was our final Kilmorie Child Quality Cups led by me and Martha. We held it over Teams, so we were able to have all children for year 1-6 present.
Children from each class had been nominated by their teachers for each of our eight Kilmorie Child Qualities and we celebrated all the nominees as well as the eight winners. It was lovely to see the classes supporting each other and celebrating the success of their classmates when the cups were awarded. A full list of the nominees can be seen in the celebration section of the newsletter.
Here are the winners:
We have again had lots of visits this week:
On Thursday Nicola, Shivani and Alessandra took 17 children on our first Young Carers trip. They went to Lewisham Lanes Bowling, had lunch, played in the park and ended the day with an ice cream. They shared their stories, made new friends and laughed and played.
Over the last academic year, we have run been running groups for children who have a member of their family who are living with a disability, an illness, mental health or a neuro diverse need. The group is a chance for them to talk to other children who may understand a little bit about what life can be like for them, to enjoy some time that is just for them and to meet new people and enjoy new experiences, Please find photo's within the school news section.
Catapluf at Catford Theatre visit
We had an opportunity to build cultural capital for some children from across the school when we were invited to take part in an Arts Council funded music performance by Catapluf, a company run by parents in our Kilmorie community. It was loud, lively and fun- a great inclusive experience for parents and children alike from schools all across Lewisham.
New reception children: It has been lovely to welcome all our new reception children who will be starting in September for their stay and play session. These were spread over the week so they could meet their new class whilst exploring our wild garden – much fun was had by all.
On Tuesday, Lions class visited Surrey Docks Farm. They used public transport to go on a school trip for the first time and showed great navigation skills. The children loved learning about farm life and seeing goats, cows, sheep and ducks. The children and their families also had the opportunity to feed them too! Thank you to all the families who made this trip an unforgettable adventure!
The Children in Years 2 and 5 had a cricket engagement day taught by Kent Cricket, who learnt various cricket skills and games to enhance their cricket knowledge. The sessions were a great success and enjoyed by both the children and staff. We are very much looking forward to working with them again next academic year.
Our Outdoor Space is having a make over! We are very lucky to have a parent at the school, Melanie Hick, who has designed a garden for RHS Hampton Court, she has won a Silver Gilt medal for her Climate-Forward Garden and the plants from the garden will be coming to Kilmorie School. We will be having 2 gardening sessions to incorporate the plants into our gardens. These will be on: Saturday 13th July for the climate forward garden, 2-4pm and Sunday 14th July 10.30 -12.30pm will be dedicated to planting the Monkey Puzzle tree in memory of Jeena who worked at Kilmorie’s wrap around care for a number of years. Do please come along – everyone is welcome
We are in First News! Well, Tully and Emanuel in year 5 are! Tully has given so much to our school community in the short time she has been here. Emmanuel was a reluctant writer and scared of dogs. It has been brilliant to see him gain an understanding of how to be around dogs, but even more impressive, was his enthusiasm to write about his experiences. Do have a read as he features in the ‘Your News’ section of the children's newspaper First News.
Reports: Next Friday you will be receiving your child(ren)’s school report, included in the envelope will be your child’s data sheet. This is the information we hold on our school MIS system. It is essential all information is correct and complete and ask that these are returned, either signed to say all correct or with any amendments/corrections and signed. Thank you
Open evening: We are holding our annual open evening for parents to drop in between 3:45-6:00pm on Wednesday 17th July. Please be mindful that this is an opportunity for you if you feel you need to discuss anything in your child’s report or to say thank you to your child’s current teacher. It is not a formal parents’ evening. Can I also ask if the fire alarm goes off, you leave the building through the nearest exit and wait on the playground's main path? Thank you
Parent Governor Vacancies: In the autumn term we have two parent vacancies coming up. We were thinking it would be good to share this now to give time for people to explore whether it is something you may be interested in. It is an important role in helping to support the school to set its strategic vision. Some of our current governors have offered to be around on the open evening to have a chat about the role and will be situated in the main area of the school reception. We will of course do this again when we return after the holidays.
Hand foot and mouth: We have several confirmed cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth in the school. It is a common illness and causes mouth ulcers and spots on the hands and feet. It’s most common in young children, particularly those under 10 and usually clears up by itself. It is, however, easily spread and ask if your child is unwell or is suspected of having it, to please keep them at home. For more information, please follow this link: Hand, foot and mouth disease | NHS inform
Calling all readers: Lewisham libraries are once again holding their summer holiday reading challenge from this Saturday 6th July to 22nd September. It is a great for building children’s love of reading and helping them to polish their reading skills learnt in school. There are medals and certificates to be won. If you are not a member of a Library, it is easy to join. For more information follow this link: https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/
Let’s hope the rain stays away for us over the weekend. I look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday for another jam-packed week!
Regards,
Julie
